OTHER PREVENTION MATERIAL

Risk and Protective Factors

The Risk & Protective Factor prevention model was developed by J. David Hawkins, Ph.D. and Richard F. Catalano, Ph.D. at the University of Washington. This proven prevention method involves increasing and assuring the existence of "protective factors" in a youth’s life, while reducing or eliminating "risk factors" that lead to delinquency or substance abuse. The presence and/or absence of these detailed factors has a direct correlate relationship with a youth’s tendency to abuse alcohol or other drugs.

The WSLCB Alcohol Awareness program is a firm believer in this model of prevention and works within this framework when crafting prevention material, programs, and services. To learn more about how the Risk & Protective Factor model relates to alcohol and substance abuse prevention, you can download the following pamphlet.

This six-page pamphlet gives a comprehensive overview of the risk and protective factors that relate to alcohol and substance abuse in the lives of young people. It details community, family, school, and individual/peer risk factors that pose a danger, and the protective factors that we should ensure are in place in a youth’s life.
