STATE LIQUOR STORES CELEBRATE 65
YEARS OF SERVICES
Olympia - March 31, 1999, marks the 65th
anniversary of the first retail liquor stores to open in Washington state. On December 5,
1933, the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, ending
over 13 years of prohibition. On January 23, 1934, the Washington State Liquor Act took
effect creating the Washington State Liquor Control Board. The first Board was appointed
six days later on January 29th. By the end of 1934, 46 liquor stores and 105 agency
liquor vendors were open for business.
"Liquor Control Board employees can take pride
in sixty-five years of success as we all look forward to the challenges, opportunities and
growth awaiting us in the new millennium," said Charlie Brydon, Liquor Control Board
Member.
From the first store opening in 1934 to the end of fiscal
year 1997, more than $4 billion dollars were earned and distributed to public safety,
health care and other services at the state, county and municipal level.
