Press Release

0 out of 17 Tobacco Licensees Sell Cigarettes to Minors

Tacoma- Liquor Control Board enforcement agents, along with Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, conducted 17 tobacco compliance checks on Thursday, October 10, in Tacoma. During compliance checks a 15 or 16 year old will enter a restaurant, tavern, or grocery store to attempt to buy cigarettes. Of the 17 compliance checks, none of the businesses checked sold cigarettes to a minor. 
The Liquor Control Board commends the following businesses for passing Thursday’s compliance checks:

  • Yong’s Quick Stop 6440 S Tyler St
  • 7-12 Food Store 4002 Center St
  • Am Pm 3601 Center St
  • Smokey’s 5216 S Tacoma Way
  • On The Move Grocery 2502 S 54th St 
  • Texaco Star Mart 5407 Tacoma Mall Blvd
  • 7-11 4701 S OAKES ST 
  • Circle K 4704 S Oakes St
  • Mjd Grocery 4501 S Union
  • Sunshine Grocery 3213 S 38th #C
  • Center St Deli 3807 Center St
  • Verma Fircrest 4211 Center St
  • Soonies Grocery 4915 Center St
  • Royal Fair Bp 5015 Center St
  • Smoke N Stuff 14806 Pacific Ave S
Clerks who sell tobacco to a minor receive a $50 fine for a first time offense. Licensees receive a penalty based on the following guidelines: 
  • First offense $100 dollar fine, 
  • Second offense $300 dollar fine,
  • Third offense $1,000 dollar fine with a six-month license suspension and,
  • Fourth offense is a $1,500 dollar fine with a 12-month license suspension.
