Press Release

 6 out of 21 Tobacco Licensees sell Cigarettes to Minors

March 18, 2004

 

Seattle - Liquor Control Board enforcement agents conducted 21 tobacco compliance checks on Saturday, March 13, in Seattle.  During the compliance checks a 15 or 16 year old will enter either a restaurant or a grocery store to attempt to buy cigarettes.  Of the 21 compliance checks the following 6 businesses checked sold cigarettes to a minor:

  • Discount Smoke & Beverage 9450 Sw 35th Ave

  • Ali’s Corner Gasco 8856 35th Ave Sw

  • Rite Aid 2600 Sw Barton St

  • New Luck Toy Café 4718 California Ave Sw

  • Be’s Restaurant 4509 California Ave Sw

  • Safeway Store 2622 California Ave Sw


The Liquor Control Board commends the following businesses for passing Saturday’s compliance checks:

  • Hegge’s Chevron 7580 35th Ave Sw

  • Walgreens 6330 35th Ave Sw
     


Clerks who sell tobacco to a minor receive a $50 fine for a first time offense. Licensees receive a penalty based on the following guidelines:

  •  First offense $100 dollar fine,

  •  Second offense $300 dollar fine,

  •  Third offense $1,000 dollar fine with a six-month license suspension and,

  •  Fourth offense is a $1,500 dollar fine with a 12-month license suspension.
