2 out of 14 Liquor Licensees Sell Alcohol to a Minor

August 13, 2004


King County -
Liquor Control Board enforcement officers conducted 14 compliance checks on Thursday, Aug. 5 in Seattle and Burien.  During the compliance checks, an 18, 19 or 20 year old will enter a restaurant, tavern, or grocery store to attempt to buy alcohol.  Of the 14 businesses checked the following two businesses sold alcohol to a minor: 
  • N & R Automotive, 105 S. 156th, Burien

  • Rainbow Mini Mart, 11454 16th Ave. S.W., Seattle

 The Board commends the following business for passing the Aug. 5 compliance checks:

  • State Store No. 157, 15858 First Ave. S., Burien

  • Albertson’s, 15840 First Ave. S, Burien
  • Circle C, 12640 Renton Ave. S., Seattle
  • Discount Smoke & Beverage Store, 9450 S.W. 35th Ave., Seattle
  • Jay’s Mini Mart, 15815 First Ave. S., Burien
  • Longs Drugs, 15716 First Ave. S., Burien
  • QFC, 14905 Fourth Ave. S.W., Burien
  • Rite Aid, 110 S.W. 148th St., Burien
  • Safeway, 138 S.W. 148th St., Burien
  • Safeway, 4740 42nd Ave. S.W., Seattle
  • Trader Joe’s, 15868 First Ave. S., Burien
  • USA Petroleum & Grocery, 303 S.W. 148th St., Burien

Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor receive a criminal citation.  Liquor licensees receive either an administrative violation notice (AVN) or a written warning from the Liquor Control Board based on past offenses.

The first time AVN penalty for selling alcohol to a minor is a five-day suspension or a $500 fine, a second offense is a 7-day suspension with no monetary option, a third offense is a 30-day suspension with no monetary option, and a fourth offense is a license cancellation.
