3 out of 10 Liquor Licensees Sell Alcohol to a Minor

PIERCE COUNTY -
Liquor Control Board enforcement officers conducted 10 compliance checks in Pierce County on Wednesday, Aug. 11.  During the compliance checks, an 18, 19 or 20 year old will enter a restaurant, tavern, or grocery store to attempt to buy alcohol.  Of the 10 businesses checked, three sold alcohol to a minor: 
  • Harvest Time Country Store, 9507A State Route 302, Gig Harbor

  • Key Peninsula Market, 9522 State Route 302, Gig Harbor
  • Peninsula Market, 9021 Key Peninsula Highway N., Lakebay

 The Board commends the following business for passing the Aug. 11 compliance checks: 

  • Store No. 646, 6075A Tyee Drive N.W., Gig Harbor

  • Bridgeway Market, 6707 Tyee Drive N.W., Gig Harbor
  • Friendly Food Mart, 16915 Elgin-Clifton Road, Gig Harbor
  • Key Center Shell, 13706 State Route 302, Gig Harbor
  • PC Deli Mart, 3025 Steilacoom Blvd., Steilacoom
  • Peninsula Market, 14220 92nd Ave. N.W., Gig Harbor
  • Purdy 76, 13818 Purdy Drive, Purdy

Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor receive a criminal citation.  Liquor licensees receive either an administrative violation notice (AVN) or a written warning from the Liquor Control Board based on past offenses.

The first time AVN penalty for selling alcohol to a minor is a five-day suspension or a $500 fine, a second offense is a 7-day suspension with no monetary option, a third offense is a 30-day suspension with no monetary option, and a fourth offense is a license cancellation.
