Press Release

Eight of nine Yakima County liquor licensees pass compliance check

January 25, 2005

Yakima County
Washington State Liquor Control Board enforcement officers conducted nine liquor law compliance checks in Yakima and Union Gap on Jan. 7, and eight of the nine businesses checked refused to sell alcohol to an underage person employed by the Board.

During compliance checks, an 18-, 19- or 20-year old operative enters a restaurant, tavern, or grocery store to attempt to buy alcohol. Of the nine businesses checked on Jan. 7, the minor was able to purchase alcohol only at:
  • BJ’s Get and Go,  3101 Main St., Union Ga

The Board commends the following eight businesses for refusing to sell alcohol to a minor during the Jan. 7 checks:

  • Ahtanum General Store, 8301 Ahtanum Road, Yakima

  • Ahtanum Food Mart, 207 Ahtanum Road, Union Gap

  • Butler’s AM/PM in Union Gap, 20 E. Valley Mall Blvd, Union Gap

  • Coco’s Ahtanum, 1504 Ahtanum Road, Union Gap

  • Gearjammer Truck Plaza, 2310 Rudkin Road, Union Gap

  • Rainier Place, 1811 Rainier  Place, Union Gap

  • Union Gap Food Mart, 3312 Main St., Union Gap

  • Wiley City Market, 2929 S. Wiley Road, Yakima

Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor receive a criminal citation.  Liquor licensees receive either an administrative violation notice (AVN) or a written warning from the Liquor Control Board based on past offenses.

The first time AVN penalty for selling alcohol to a minor is a five-day suspension or a $500 fine, a second offense is a 7-day suspension with no monetary option, a third offense is a 30-day suspension with no monetary option, and a fourth offense is a license cancellation.
