OLYMPIA – The Enforcement and Education Division will distribute a new ultraviolet pen device to state
stores later this month to help employees check customer identification. Introduced at the February 1 Board
meeting, the ultraviolet pen verifies the authenticity of state driver licenses and I.D. cards by illuminating
embedded holograms in the cards. If the cards are not authentic, the state seal won’t glow.
“This is a great new tool our store employees will use as a part of their verification process,” said
Wanda Carver, Acting Retail Operations Manager. Carver added, “Thanks to our Enforcement Division’s ability
to obtain these devices, we are able to continue to add to our efforts to keep alcohol out of the hands of kids.”
“At the point of sale, our liquor store employees are the first line of defense against sales to minors.
The UV light pen simply adds to the trained employee’s ability to check ID thoroughly, to recognize a fake ID,
and to reward good judgment. Our agency store employees are important partners in reducing youth access to
alcohol,” said acting Enforcement Chief Rex Prout.
This project is a partnership with the Reducing Underage Drinking Program administered by the DSHS Division
of Alcohol and Substance Abuse and funded through the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice of Delinquency Prevention.
