August 23, 1999 WASHINGTON WINES - "ENJOYED THE WORLD OVER" Olympia- This years Washington Wine Month marks the fifteenth year the Washington State Liquor Control Board has dedicated a special month to feature the wines produced in our state. From August 23 through September 30, the Liquor Control Boards stores and independently owned agencies will highlight a wide selection of Washington wines.Washington State is now the second largest wine-producing state in the nation, with over 25,000 acres of vineyards and 122 wineries. The Washington wine industry is growing at a quick pace, with a new winery opening every 18 days. Our wines are sold to all 50 states and exported to 23 countries. Although strong growth is occurring, it is the quality of our wines that receive the most attention. Washington wines continue to perform very well in national and international competitions, and our state regularly receives positive reviews in many highly regarded wine publications such as The Wine Spectator and The Wine Enthusiast. In the mid-seventies, as Washington began to emerge as a quality wine producing State, Riesling was the variety that initially gave Washington its good reputation among wine connoisseurs. Since then, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have become the wines to look for from Washington, but Syrah and other Rhone varieties such as Viognier are seeing increased production. Italian varieties like Sangiovesse and Pinot Gris are also showing good promise for increased Washington production.
